Passenger numbers on the Nizhny Novgorod Cableway surge by 83% in early May

According to the transportation operator, passenger numbers on the Nizhny Novgorod – Bor cableway increased by 83% in the first four days of May 2025 compared to the same period last year. This surge was made possible thanks to the extensive modernization of infrastructure by Urbantech Cable Transport, which included a complete replacement of the cabins.

Boris Shlom, Executive Director at Urbantech Cable Transport, commented: “The new cabins have proven effective during periods of increased demand. We saw significant passenger growth over the holidays, and the upgraded system managed it smoothly. All 56 cabins, equipped with modern safety and comfort features, are operating as normal, ensuring reliable transport for passengers.”

Sergey Morozov, Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, added: “In the first four days of May, around 50,000 passengers used the cable car, compared to 27,000 in the same period last year. This is clear evidence of the success of our efforts to develop the region’s transport infrastructure. The modernization has doubled capacity, reduced waiting times, and made journeys more comfortable for residents and visitors alike.”

Thanks to the replacement of the cabins, the cableway's capacity has increased from 500 to 1,000 people per hour, which is especially important during periods of increased demand. The new cabins are equipped with video surveillance systems, intercom buttons to contact the control room, LCD screens, USB charging ports, and are adapted for passengers with limited mobility. These upgrades have not only made journeys more comfortable, but also increased the cableway’s appeal to tourists, while reducing the strain on road traffic between Nizhny Novgorod and Bor.

Urbantech Cable Transport continues to monitor the performance of the upgraded system. The company’s near-term plans include further modernization, such as installing heated circuits at stations and replacing the load-bearing and hauling cable. After the commissioning of the new Avtozavodskaya metro line stations, the cableway will become part of a major transportation hub.
