Urbantech Cable Transport completes first stage of modernization of Nizhny Novgorod – Bor Cableway

On May 1, 2025, the Nizhny Novgorod – Bor cableway reopened after an extensive modernization carried out by Urbantech Cable Transport. In April, the entire fleet of cabins was replaced: 28 outdated cabins were swapped for 56 new, modern ones that meet the highest standards of safety and comfort.

Boris Shlom, Executive Director at Urbantech Cable Transport, noted that the infrastructure upgrade has significantly improved the quality of passenger service. “The Nizhny Novgorod cableway has always paid attention to accessibility for passengers with disabilities. During this modernization, we worked to make it even more comfortable. We also considered the needs of cyclists, as this type of transport is becoming increasingly popular in Nizhny Novgorod. As with all Urbantech projects, our goal in upgrading the cableway was to provide the highest possible comfort and safety through the use of modern technological solutions.”
Each new cabin is equipped with video surveillance, a direct line to the control room, LCD screens, speakers, and USB charging ports. Some cabins are specially adapted for transporting bicycles.
According to Denis Ryabinin, Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, the modernization will reduce waiting times and increase the capacity of the cableway from 500 to 1,000 passengers per hour: “The cableway across the Volga is a vital transportation artery for the residents of Bor and Nizhny Novgorod. It has also become one of the city’s well-known landmarks, which means that during the tourist season, its load traditionally increases. Modernization and the renewal of the cable cars will allow the system to reach its full potential.”
Vladimir Soldatenkov, Chairman of the Committee on Transport and Road Infrastructure in the Legislative Assembly, emphasized the importance of the project for the region’s transportation system: “The cableway between Nizhny Novgorod and Bor shortens travel times for thousands of passengers every day and helps relieve pressure on the bridges across the Volga. This is especially important for the growing Nizhny Novgorod agglomeration. I am confident that the upgraded cableway will set a new standard for urban transport in Russia, and that the experience gained here will be invaluable for future projects, including the planned cableway across the Oka. This is an investment in both residents’ comfort and the region’s future.”
The second stage of modernization will include further infrastructure upgrades, such as the installation of heated circuits at stations, technical improvements, and the replacement of load-bearing and hauling cable. After the commissioning of the new Avtozavodskaya metro line stations, the cableway will become part of a major transportation hub.
